Baker's Bay was the site of a cruise ship stop, built in the early 1990's, called Treasure Island. A complex was built, with an ampitheatre, bars, small boat rentals, diving, a dolphin show, a great beach, - typical cruise ship fare - but it failed because of, well I've heard 2 stories; first story: because of the rages (a rage is a situation where, due to a storm way out in the Atlantic, large waves will break on the northeast shores of the Abacos, even on on otherwise calm day - I'm talking 10 to 20 foot breaking waves roaring through the passages. Large freighters have been broken up trying to navigate these passages in a rage.), during a rage the cruise ships could not come in and a cruise ship not keeping to a schedule is a major problem. Second story: When the cruise ships did come in they would tie up on a mooring in a dredged channel. Between the channel silting in and low tides during the full moon, occaisionally a ship would ground itself at the mooring, leaving a major black mark on a captain's record (through no fault of his own) and after numerous incidents no captains would take that stop. I really don't know which one is true, but there was a screw-up of monumental proportions somewhere...

So the complex was just abandoned - it was as if they just went home one day and did not come back. Buildings, kitchen equipment, lighting equipment in the theatre, all kinds of things just left there. Of course pilferage, hurricanes, and just plain weather has taken it's toll, but it is very strange to walk around what's left of the complex.

Old amphitheatre.
Geez, look what we missed!

On the east side of the anchorage there is the Beach Nut's Cafe, small palm-thatched picnic area made by some locals. I think the pictures show it all - and yes, it was spotless when I was there.
