10/31/2005 Irrationality, synchronicity and denial.
All that, and I have yet to untie the dock lines... In preparation for this trip I knew that I would have to do something about my car. But I put off making a decision on whether to sell it, donate it to a charity of find a place to park it for the winter (the denial part). Common sense would suggest getting rid of it in any fashion possible - the car really is on it's last legs. But I have had it for 19 years and I really like that car even though it is rapidly becoming a junk heap.

The vehicle in question is a 1986 Nissan 300ZX T-Top. It needs a great deal of work to put it back into basic shape. But as the time came to actually DO something I could not bring myself to part with it. I do get quite attached to some objects at times...

So I decide to keep it (once again....) and when I return from the Bahamas I will have it fixed up enough to drive it for another year or so... (irrationality) So in the process of finding a home for the clunker for the winter, a chance meeting with a friend turned into an offer to let me park the car at his place. Problem solved in 5 minutes after struggling for days to make a decision... (Synchronicity?)

"The hardest part is untying the dock lines."

It's true. Once you get going, things kind of take on a life of their own and you are reacting much of the time - to weather, locations, events, etc. But it is starting the journey that is the true leap.

Well, today I leapt. It took me a while to get things squared away, but I headed out. I only went 12 miles, but the only goal of the day was to get the boat out of the slip and pointed south.

I love attaining goals, which is one reason I set such simple ones...

As usual, the wind was in my face all day, so I never even took the sail cover off...

"Change of weather, change of plans."

The wind was blowing - 15-20 on the nose and started to creep up from there. I had to bail out and find an anchorage on the Coan River in Virginia - pretty far out of my way, but I'm sitting in dead calm water now...

Got a late start out of Fishing Bay, but had a great sail for a while. Then I had to turn into the wind and slog all the way to Norfolk. Had to do the last 45 minutes or so in the dark. Luckily there was a tug pushing a barge that I just tucked in behind and followed all the way in. Anchored at Hospital point for the night.
