Leg 6: Homeward Bound

5/6/2006 Green Turtle Cay, Abacos

Start : 10:15am
Arrive: 2:15pm

I left Marsh Harbour to attempt to round Whale Cay Passage and test the repairs to my engine. This time I made it, the engine working almost perfectly. I was not completely sure it would, with a new fuel pump and wiring, a repair to the exhaust elbow made from Marine-Tex epoxy, a coke can and hose clamps, and a leaking raw water pump.

But I did arrive in time to see some of the Island Roots Heritage Festival on Green Turtle Cay. Marlee was there with some friends.

5/7/2006 Great Sale Cay

Start : 8:15am
Arrive: 6:00pm

Had a nice sail early until the wind died in the afternoon. Stopped for the night at Great Sale Cay - the halfway point to West End. Had to make one more repair while underway - the mounting plate for the autopilot (that I had glued together after I kicked it and broke it a while back) became unglued so I rigged up a strap to hold the autopilot in place..

5/8/2006 Mangrove Cay

Start :
Arrive:

Stopped at Mangrove Cay to avoid a trip into 20kt winds and an extra night at Old Bahama Bay Marina. I ended up staying two nights here and the wind did not stop.

5/10/2006 West End, Grand Bahama Island

Start : 11:00am
Arrive: 6:00pm
Total Miles: 1581.2

Left Mangrove Cay at 11am because I need a high tide to get through Indian Cay Channel. Going under power as there was NO wind at all. On the way to West End my engine quit again - same fuel pump problem. I rigged up the bypass wire I had used for testing and was back in motion in less than 15 minutes.

When I arrived at West End, I refueled, checked the latest weather forecast, begged a shower to wake me up, and decided to head on out to Cape Canaveral.

Fuel: 35 Gal.

With an uncertain engine and a favorable weather forecast that did not exactly match what was actually happening at the moment, I left West End to head back to the US. It ended up being a fairly uneventful, if somewhat rolly, passage. That is, until the last mile...

As I was approaching the inlet, the sky in the west was getting darker by the minute. I was racing for the inlet, hoping to beat the storm, but it was not to be. A big ugly thunderstorm was moving in from the west, and I had to turn around 1 mile from the inlet and head back out to open water. The storm hit with initial gusts of 40 knots or so, then settled down to blow 25-30 for the next 30 minutes or so. The last little insult at the end of the trip - or so I thought...

I had planned to stay that night at Cape Marina, just inside the inlet and close to the Customs Office, where I had to check in. But they were full for that night - fishing tournament - and I found another marina in the Canaveral Barge Canal, just past the drawbridge and canal lock. But not so fast - it was 4:15pm and the bridge's next opening was at 5:15. So it was drift back and forth for an hour until the bridge opened.

But then, the little aggravations turned into good luck. When I tied up at the marina, there was another sailboat at the dock flying the 'Q' flag indicating a vessel newly returned from outside the US. I looked at the name and saw it was 'Diva', a name I had heard many times on the radio. I went over the next day (Customs was closed and all I did was collapse and sleep) to see if they wanted to share a cab to the Customs office, and met Carl and Debbie. They had rented a car and had already cleared in, but offered to drive me over to the office. We then went on to Wal Mart and out to lunch, and later on they introduced me to the infamous "D-dockers" - Debbie and Carl used to keep their boat in that marina on 'D' dock, also known as the party dock. So I ended up staying an extra night hanging out on D dock drinking wine.... I saw an alligator in the marina!

I had to leave Harbortown before I moved in there. A great group of people, not to mention my friend Don from nearby Cocoa Beach, who took me out to mail a package and returned me to the marina in his Boston Whaler via the ICW and the canals behind his house. So I did a short hop to Titusville and the anchorage here just to get moving again.

A long day, fighting adverse current and hundreds of 'Love Bugs' - small black flying insects that swarm in mating flights at this time of year. They are everywhere, all over the boat - harmless but annoying.

Pulled into Halifax Harbor Marina because the wind really picked up and I was unsure of the exact location of the anchorage I had planned on stopping at tonight - and more thunderstorms are forecast, so I ended up staying another day here to avoid the rain.

5/17/2006 St Augustine, Fl

Start : 8:30am
Arrive: 6:00pm
Miles: 48.7
Total Miles: 1836.8

Never Again

Got to St Augustine and anchored north of the Bridge of Lions. I have done this before and had some problems due to the swift tidal current that runs through the anchorage. But tonight I did not think I would have a problem as the winds were very light. But after slowly swinging around completely on my anchor rode in the space of 45 minutes, first coming to within 8 feet of another anchored boat and then moving over to very near the boat anchored on the other side, I decided to pull up the anchor (at about 10pm), go back through the drawbridge and over to the city marina for the night so I would not have to stand anchor watch all night.

From here on out I will stay in the marina when passing through here.

5/18/2006 Fernandina Beach, Fl

Start : 8:30am
Arrive: 6:15pm

Moved on up to Fernandina Beach to pick up Mickey for the offshore run to Charleston.

5/20/2006 Charleston, SC

Start : 5/19 12:30pm
Arrive: 5/20 12:48pm

With Mickey on board we went outside to Charleston. Motored the entire way as the winds were very light and variable. The breeze was mostly from the shore so the love bugs and flies were a major annoyance during the daylight hours. A pod of about 20 dolphin came to visit shortly before sunset, playing in the bow wave. And of course there was a mild squall with some 30-35 knot winds right as we arrived at the inlet...
