Finally! We made it to the Bahamas. Not the best conditions to cross over but it was time to go. The predicted southerly shift of the wind did not happen and the wind and the waves (3ft and not far enough apart.) were in my face, really slowing me down so it took forever (14.5 hours) and I arrived after dark.

We stayed the next day there as clearing customs required us to miss the tide. Also I needed to rest and re-charge after the long day yesterday. We saw a manatee and several (largeish) sharks swimming around the marina.

Great Sale Cay is an uninhabited island conveniently located a days run away from West End. Because we needed a tide to get on the banks we got a late start and arrived after dark. No big deal as there isn't much there to hit except a large island.

As the last hour was done in the dark we used the sunset as a photo op...

We were on the way to Green Turtle, but decided to stop and check out Powell Cay on the advice of one of Rick's friends as a 'don't miss' stop.

New Format! I got a new Anchor Alarm App and it provides this display. This is a screen shot from the app. The orange icon with the anchor is where I am anchored/moored/in a marina. Much better than typing all that info in...

Stopped by Manjack Cay to check it out. The holding is not that good here, I don't think anyone is going to sleep well tonight...

We were on the way to Green Turtle, but due to the wind forecast, decided to continue on to Marsh Harbour.

We are in Marsh Harbour!! Sampson has come Home!!!

Marsh Harbour

4/5/23 - We have been in Marsh Harbour for a few days now. I have not been here for almost 20 years, and it is sad to see the extent of the damage that remains since Hurricane Dorian came smashing through here in September of 2019. There is still visible damage yet to be repaired, although they have come a long way since the hurricane.

Full Moon over Marsh Harbour

4/?/23 - Another boat issue. A leak developed in the wet exhaust hose coming from the engine, which was leaking a fairly large amount of water into the bilge when the engine was running. (I have to run the engine every day to charge the batteries.) The problem is that there is no place in Marsh Harbour that has a replacement hose in stock. So it's on to the Cruiser's Net in the morning to seek help.
Later that day I get a hail from Greg on Lulu - another cruiser, whom I had never met, and he had found a section of the right size hose on Man 'o War Cay in the scrap barrel of they boatyard there. I took the ferry over to Man 'o War get the hose. It was exactly what I needed. 4/?/23 - Did a day trip to hometown on the ferry. Very nice, they are farther along in their post-Dorian reconstruction.

At Fishers Bay - went to Nippers and Grabbers. Ran down to Marsh Harbour to get the bottom cleaned and new zincs put on the prop. Was able to get that done and return to Fishers bay on the same day.

Went to Green Turtle Cay. Truly an amazing day for me. When I cruised on into Black Sound at Green Turtle Cay, my friends Rick and Cheryl were already on a mooring and talking with someone in a dinghy holding onto their side, evidently the guy that manages the moorings. Rick points to an empty mooring and yells out that it has my name on it. So I go over to pick up the mooring and the manager comes over and passes me up the mooring pennant. I looked at him and it was my good friend Roger that I met on my first trip to the Bahamas in 2001. I could not believe it! Cruising magic for sure...

Returned to Powell Cay to swim and snorkel, but I decided to leave for Great Sale in the morning due to the weather forecast. My friend Kevin is flying in to meet me at West End on Saturday the 29th and I want to be sure to sure I get to West End by then. There are several days of very iffy weather predicted for the next few days.

At Old Bahama Bay at West End. Here I wait for Kevin to arrive and for the right weather to cross the Gulf Stream and back to the U.S.

This is Effie, the Bread Lady. She shows up in the marina Thursday,
Friday and Saturdays with a wagon of fresh baked breads and pies.
They are delicious - sometimes still warm from the oven.

And don't drop your bread in the water at the marina.
There are 8 ft sharks swimming around the docks.

Farewell to the Bahamas - for now...
