Sometimes you just have to cut the dock lines...

It is past time to get moving. So I cut (Actually cut, with a knife.) the dock lines and headed out. I was headed for Pirates Cove Marina to have lunch with a friend. It is only a twelve mile trip, but you have to start somewhere. It was a COLD trip, with winds blowing 20-25 knots making it bitter cold. Also when I got there the fuel dock was closed and the laundry facilities were broken. My plan was to move on to Solomons Island, but I don't have enough fuel to get there, plus the forecast is for temps in the low 30's in the morning. That was enough to make me change my plan to another short day - 14 miles - leave later in the day after it warms up a bit, and go to the expensive marina to fuel up and hopefully get my laundry done. At this rate it's going to be an expensive trip...

The fuel dock on the West River was open, so I fueled up and headed south for another short day. Made it to Herrington Harbour South to dock for the night. Oddly enough it's a very nice upscale marina and usually very expensive. But between the off season rates and my BoatUS discount it was the same cost as Pirates Cove last night, but a 100 times better. So I got my laundry done, took a long hot shore shower and had a great sandwich from the place across the street.

And there was a big formal wedding in the event room - quite the bash. I had to work my way through the entire wedding party and guests in my foulies (Foul weather gear - They are very warm and block the wind) carrying my laundry, as they had all come out for the 'surprise'. As I walked across the patio through the crowd, I was invited to join the party and offered drinks, but I was in filthy clothes and on my way to do my laundry so I had to pass. But the surprise was a fireworks show that could rival many a small town's July 4th show.

These are the sort of things that tend to happen while you are cruising. Maybe that funky ol' cruising magic is starting to ramp up. I need it after the last 2 months of getting the boat ready and moving out of my apartment at the same time...

Headed out for another shortened run, this time due to geography. I could not make anyplace with a marina after passing Solomons Island until well after dark and it's too cold for that. So I motored 8 hours and stopped at Solomons Island. Tomorrow I will be racing the sun on a fairly long run to Deltaville. You can get an idea of distances by looking at the Progress Map.

Staying put today. Wind hitting 30 its and wind chill is downright dangerous. This is my first of what will be probably be many 'wimp out' days.

Set out for Deltaville,VA, but it was not to be. Everything was nice for the first 5 hours, but as I hit the junction of the Potomac River and the Bay, the wind and the waves picked up I was bashing into 20-25 kts apparent wind - extremely unpleasant. I would hit a 3-4 ft wave head on and it would knock my speed down to 3 kts. After 45 minutes of that I turned tail and went to the Coan River, 12 miles out of my way. I should have known as this exact thing has happened to me before and I ended up in this same place.

Here is a shot of my GPS track to give some perspective.

Very nice day for boating if not for sailing. Very light winds, but very pleasant to be out in it. No freezing my ass off.
